Lucas Simons, CEO, is passionate about sustainable agriculture and has dedicated his life to working on this topic. Ten years ago, Lucas founded SCOPEinsight to respond to the need for agribusinesses to link better to markets. Since then, SCOPEinsight has grown from an organization that provides assessments for agribusinesses to a leading provider of the business intelligence so very needed to help stakeholders make informed investment and capacity building decisions. Lucas deeply believes that partnership and scaling sustainability can become reality, create momentum, and drive AMEA lasting change. It is this belief that has motivated him to initiate AMEA – a first of its kind global platform that drives an evidence-based, scaleable approach to turn farmer organizations into thriving businesses.
Lucas has a long history of seeking sustainability solutions in the market. Prior to forming SCOPEinsight, he was the first director of UTZ CERTIFIED (2002-2008) – a leading global certification and sustainability standard organization for sustainable coffee, cocoa, and tea and was responsible for spreading the certification label globally.
Every time a that a market fails - because of the same reasons - we tend to do the same things about it. We tend to respond in the same way, we make the same mistakes... there are no simple solutions...we need to change the rules of the game and go to the root causes.

In order for interventions or solutions to be sustainable, they need to make business sense. This is where I aim to bring my entrepreneurial thinking into the work we do so all of the stakeholders we work with, ranging from Agribusinesses, NGO's, Corporates, Financiers, and Governments, benefit.

As Business Intelligence Manager, Amit works to utilize the intersections between Data Science and Agriculture at SCOPEinsight to shed light on the driving variables behind farmer professionalism across the globe.
Amit has been passionate about agriculture ever since he read Stephen Gliessman’s work on Agroecology and how we can work towards an even more efficient agricultural system. The more he delved into this field he read everything he could and started to work both locally and internationally in Canada, Tanzania, and India in extending nuanced applications of agroecological concepts to farmers. The biggest problem he faced was that each of these contexts had similar problems that seemed to be shared sentiments of other farmers in their region. He decided to dedicate his work to improve our food system through pairing Data Science and Machine Learning with the immense agricultural data sets that exist presently. He believes that utilizing computers to help us do the heavy lifting when it comes to modeling agricultural professionalism is key in addressing SDG 1 and 2.
He holds a Masters of Science in Agricultural Development from the University of Copenhagen (UCPH) and a Bachelors of Science in Applied Biology from the University of British Columbia (UBC)
SCOPEinsight is creating new data that integrates the 450 million un-banked smallholder farmers on the edge of growing global value chains into global agricultural growth. As a B-Corp that invests in system wide alliances, SCOPE is also positioned to do it the right way, with revenue to sustain data services but a social mission to create value for sector. There are few such opportunities to do smallholder data the right way.
As IT Development QA Officer, Jem Kipgen is responsible for overseeing assessment processes and maintaining the IT systems that support the operational processes. What Jem enjoys most about working at SCOPEinsight is the small, yet multicultural and experienced team. Despite the challenges of the sector, he believes that “it is critical to keep pushing to highlight the difficulties that farmer organizations and the agricultural sector, and therefore by default, humanity faces. Modern problems require modern solutions and making sense (business intelligence) of all the data is a big step in that direction.”
Jem holds a BA degree in Computer Information Systems and Applied Economics from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota and an MSc in Business Administration, with a specialization in Finance, from TiasNimbas Business School in Utrecht.
SCOPEinsight has come a long way since I started and we still have a long way to go, this keeps me motivated.

With a growing world population of 7,6 million people, an unacceptably high malnutrition rate, and 10% of the world’s population living in poverty (the majority of whom are rural), we have to stop wasting time implementing programs fueled by dogma and have to do what actually works (and is backed by evidence).
